Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd (SMM) is a leading producer of nonferrous metals in the world. It dates back to 1590 when Riemon Soga, the founder started a copper smelting and manufacturing business in Kyoto. SMM set up the plated lead frame production line in Singapore in 1977 to capture the overseas market which was expanding rapidly. From 1990 to 1994, factories in Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia and China were established to expand the capacity in the Asia Pacific Region. Sumitomo Metal Mining Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. (SMMAP) was the regional head quarter of this Semiconductor Packaging Material business. From 1st July 2013, the lead frame business of Sumitomo Metal Mining entered into a Joint venture with Hitachi Cable. The Joint venture harnesses the strength of both companies and through the integration of Management Resources, effective use of the both companies' manufacturing base, equipment and technology; it will enhance our competitive strength in the global market and be the World's largest provider of Lead Frames. SH Materials Co., Ltd (Japan) is the newly formed Joint venture company and currently has manufacturing bases in Malaysia, Taiwan, China and Japan. SH Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. (Singapore) is the regional head quarter (RHQ) for SH Material Co., Ltd in the Asia Pacific region.

Sumitomo's involvement with copper mining spans over 420 years. During that time, the business has faced several major challenges due to changes in external conditions. In each case, management responded to the changes with skill and tenacity to forge a new business with a revised strategy and organization. The enterprise's sustained growth has made a significant and wide-ranging contribution to the development of Japanese society.
